In this case a hive is a colony of bees in a manmade box

  • Beehives become abandoned/neglected for a variety of reasons some common reasons are:
  • There were bees on the property when the property was sold and the bees were left behind.
  • The beekeeper has lost interest or for health reasons is unable to tend to the bees any more.

Pest control companies have removed hives from a property and dumped them somewhere else.
If a property owner finds hives on their property the first step should be to contact the owner of the hives.

Registered beekeepers should have their hives marked with a brand these are allocated by the appropriate state government authority. For more information on the relevant state government authority look at.

http://www.honeybee.com.au/beeinfo/dpi.html

These people should be able to provide the contact details of the owner of the "brand" or if they are unbranded they can offer some guidance. Beehives are best approached when the bees are not flying. Bees do not fly in the cold part of the day (below about 12 degrees Centigrade) or at night Please note that bees are attracted to lights and there may be over 40,000 bees in a hive (use caution).

To most beekeepers abandoned hives are not particularly valuable as the bees may be diseased. The hives may be so neglected that for the first season there would be little or no honey. Landholders wanting bees removed from their property in most cases would be charged. However if the landholder is happy for the beekeeper to have bees on the property there is often some negotiation in any charges.
